For any one desiring a prolonged white water rafting, Sunkohi River is an ideal river for those who are seeking for adventurous and challenging river rafting tour with a combine peaceful stretches of stunning scenery, some great and challenging rapids and the experience of a lengthy trip. Offering a panoramic scenario and access to villages along the way, this rafting tour offers sense of mixed ethnic group’s culture and tradition en route. This is a perfect match for rafters who want to raft to their heart’s content, as this river is a whopping 270 kilometers long.  This ten days trip starting from Dolalghat known to be the put-in-point of this Sunkoshi river rafting tour continues through Tarang Gaon, Dumja, Khurkot, Likhu Khola, Harkapur village, Rai Ghat, Bander Ghat, Bonjur Ghat and finally concluding our trip to Barahchhatra from where you will drive to Chatara and then to Kathmandu. You will see the high mountains, open valley, forest and small remote villages at the beginning of this trip. The rapids encountered at the beginning of the river trip are fairly relaxed class 3, giving an excellent opportunity for great teamwork to really develop. This journey influences any rafting or kayaking enthusiast with relaxing canyons, refreshing waterfalls, bat caves, interesting temples, beautiful white sandy beaches for setting up camp and of course a great variety of whitewater. The changing in vegetation, scenario, and climate will help to ensure that every day you will spend on this trip is exciting and different. At the ending days of this trip, you will end up in open plains. In order to assure you that you are in safe hands, you will be provided with Nepal Government licensed river guides, who have completed Red Cross first aid training. Our guides hold rafting certifications from International Rafting Federation (IRF) and are also trained as Whitewater Rescue Technicians (WRT).

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 : Drive from Kathmandu to Dolalghat (60 km). Upon arrival, briefing and start rafting tour towards Tarang Gaon.

Taking the first step our Sunkoshi River Rafting, we drive for about three hours to reach Dolalghat. Dolalghat is famous domestic tourist spot for fishes so while you are here, don’t miss the chance to taste some. It is put-in-point of our raft. Upon your arrival at Dolalghat, you will be provided a detail briefing about the river rapids, river’s condition, process of paddling, safety and emergency rescue methods, etc. Afterward, set up for raft until you reach Tarang Gaon (village).  The river looks deceitfully peaceful and lazy and soon local villagers are encountered. You can also see several temples on the way. Upon arrival at the campsite, you can spend rest of the time exploring the surrounding area.

Day 2 : Raft from Tarang Gaon to Dumja– approx. 4 hrs. raft

On the second day of our trip, have your breakfast cooked by our crew members. Then start the rafting tour up to Dumja. The rapids you will encounter today are “No Exit” and “Meat Grinder” which fall under Grade 3 and 4 respectively. Our campsite for today is Dumja. Enjoy fire and have fun moments sharing owns experience of the day.

Day 3 : Raft from Dumja to Khurkot – approx. 6 hrs. raft

Start your day with an appetizing breakfast on this day. Today you will raft from Dumja and make your raft end point on Khurkot. You will raft to a point where Tama Koshi River joins the Sun Koshi on the left with a beach on the confluence of it. You can also visit a temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Set up your camp at Khurkot for overnight stay. You can also provide your helping hand to our team for setting the camp and preparing dinner.

Day 4 : Raft from Khurkot to Likhu Khola– approx. 5 hrs. raft

Similar to the earlier days, you will have your breakfast at your campsite. After breakfast, proceed for the rafting tour towards Likhu Khola. En route, you can also view some wild moneys and enjoy the splendid view of natural scenario. “Anxiety Series”, “Meat Grinder”, etc. are some rapids which you will experience today. These series includes: “Pre”, “Post” and “High Anxiety”. After a lunch stop, there is ample time to explore the landscape and see different ethnic groups along the river. Set up your camp today on the bank of Likhu River.

Day 5 : Raft from Likhu Khola to Harkapur village – approx. 6 hrs. raft

Continuing our raft from Likhu Khola (River), we pass by the changing valleys in terms of width. The size of the rapid can surprise you today. At some point, the crew takes the rapid very seriously. They just stop and scout to take you through the most exciting route. The place that you will be camping today is the habitats of local ethnic group called “Newar”. These ethnic groups have their own custom and languages which is totally different from the typical Nepali language.  We pass through Grade 3 rapids today. 2 and 3 are known to be the hardest rapid on the river thus, our guides will carefully scout you until you reach Harkapur village for your overnight stay.


Day 6 : Raft from Harkapur village to Rai Ghat – approx. 6 hrs. raft

Encountering some of the challenging and demanding rapids, you will be fully entertained today. It is this point where Dudh Koshi River joins Sunkoshi River from the left and the river widens into an arid area of gravel. We meet some small rapids and will teach you into another aptly named rapid ‘Jaws’. After few hours of rafting after lunch, we will pass through ‘Bridge rapids’ and ‘Krishna rapids’ carefully.

Day 7 : Raft from Rai Ghat to Bander Ghat – approx. 6 hrs. raft

You will experience hardest part of the rafting on this day. The rapid that you will encounter today is mostly of Grade 4+. “Rhino Rock” followed by “Jungle Corridor” are some of the rapids that you will experience continuously. You can even enjoy a team shower in one of the Water fall along your raft which makes your rafting more enjoyable. After rafting for about 6 hours, you will reach to Bander Ghat where you will camp for overnight.

Day 8 : Raft Bander Ghat to Bonjur Ghat – approx. 6 hrs. raft

Continuing our rafting tour, we have an appetizing breakfast over the beach. Today we raft up to Bonjur Ghat crossing the Mardheku gorge. The river spreads wide, less agitated after its confinement between steep cliffs and gorges. You can also try kayaking on this day. Our experts will guide you the basic skills that are required to maneuver the boats or learn the Eskimo roll. Upon rafting for about 6 hours, you will reach the camping site at Bonjur Ghat.

Day 9 : Raft Bonjur Ghat to Baraha Chhetra – approx. 6 hrs. raft

Moving from Bonjur Ghat, we raft towards Baraha Chhetra . Today is the second last day of our trip so with some happy memories, you might also be feeling sad since the trip is coming to an end. The rapids you will experience are normal and not so challenging in comparison to the previous days. Share your experience with our team and they will also share their stories. Day 10 : Raft from Baraha Chhetra to Chatara then drive back to Kathmandu.

Concluding our rafting trip, we raft from Baraha Chhetra to Chatara. After few minutes of rafting, you will join the dense water of Arun Koshi encountering the last rapid to the junction of Tamur Koshi. From here, the river changes its course from west-east to north-east through beautiful gorge floating to the white temple of Baraha Chhetra set upon the east bank. It is mainly dedicated to the Hindu God Vishnu. According to the Legend, the Lord Vishnu once went down to this area as a white boar and killed an evil demon known as Hirayankashyapu in Satya Yuga. The statues of Baraha Chhetra are existed from 5th Century. There is a stone in front of temple that will examine whether you are sinless or sinful. It is said that only the virtue person can lift the stone. Upon arrival at Chatara, drive back to Kathmandu or drive up to Biratnagar and take a flight from Kathmandu to Biratnagar.
