On the following day, you will enjoy a full-day birding tour inside Chitwan National Park, accompanied by a nature walk. Each year, dedicated bird watchers and conservationists survey bird species occurring all over the country. In 2006, they recorded 543 species in the Chitwan National Park, much more than in any other protected area in Nepal and about two-thirds of Nepal’s globally threatened species. Additionally, 20 black-chinned yuhina, a pair of Gould’s sunbirds, a pair of blossom-headed parakeets, and one slaty-breasted rail, an uncommon winter visitor, were sighted in spring 2008.

Especially the park’s alluvial grasslands are important habitats for the critically endangered Bengal florican, the vulnerable lesser adjutant, grey-crowned prinia, swamp francolin, and several species of grass warblers. In 2005, more than 200 slender-billed babblers were sighted in three different grassland types. The threatened Oriental darter is a resident breeder around the many lakes, where also egrets, bitterns, storks, and kingfishers abound. The park is one of the few known breeding sites of the globally threatened spotted eagle. Peafowl and jungle fowl scratch their heads on the forest floor.

Equipment List

Binoculars: Invest in a good pair of binoculars with a comfortable grip, appropriate magnification (usually 8x42 or 10x42), and quality optics to get a clear view of birds at a distance.

Spotting Scope: For long-distance birding, a spotting scope with a tripod can be invaluable in providing detailed views of distant birds.

Field Guidebook: Carry a bird field guide specific to the region you're visiting. It should include illustrations, descriptions, and distribution maps of local bird species.

Notebook and Pen: Keep a birding journal to record your observations, including species, behavior, location, and date. This helps in keeping a birding checklist.

Camera and Telephoto Lens: If you're into bird photography, a camera with a telephoto lens (300mm or longer) can capture stunning bird images.
